Two suicide bombers on motorcycles struck a bus and hospital in Karachi on February 5, killing 23 people and targeting Shiite Muslims in Pakistan's financial capital for the second time in six weeks. Women and children were among 12 people killed when a bomber rammed a motorcycle bomb into a bus of Shiites on one of Karachi's busiest roads, gutting the bus and sending glass flying, officials and witnesses said. A second bomber killed 11 people, damaging ambulances and the entrance to the casualty department at Jinnah Hospital where the bomb victims were being treated and anxious relatives were gathering. Pakistani kommertspealinnas Karachis korraldati täna kaks järjestikust šiiamoslemite vastu suunatud pommirünnakut, kusjuures teine neist pandi toime haiglas, kuhu viidi esimeses kannatada saanud.

Plahvatuste põhjuste kohta on segased teated: ühed räägivad mootorratastel liikunud suitsiidipommitajatest, teised aga eelnevalt paigaldatud lõhkekehadest, vahendas Reuters sündmuskohalt.

Esimeses rünnakus, millega õhiti šiiite usuriitusele vedanud buss, hukkus tosin inimest. Teises plahvatuses sai surma veel vähemalt kümme inimest. Samuti on palju vigastatuid. Lisaks teatas politsei veel ühe haiglasse peidetud pommi kahjutuks tegemisest.

Täna kulmineerub šiiitide arba'eeni usupüha, mistõttu on liikvel hulgaliselt palverändureid, kes osutuvad äärmuslike sunniitide jaoks kergeks märklauaks. Pakistanis on pommirünnakute taga sageli valitsusvastased Talibani sissid, kes on korraldanud lugematul arvul plahvatusi rahvarohketel turgudel ja valitsusasutuste juures.
